Adventures of a lone ranger
This past Thursday night,
A: Hey, Goapele is performing at the Taste Lounge tonight. Do you wanna go?
B: Yeah, but i have class until 9:30pm.
A: Well, it's free before 11pm, otherwise it's $10 at the door
B: Cool.
So some friends decided they didn't want to wait 15 more minutes for my ass to quick shower and quick change. "We don't want to wait for you and end up paying" was their idea. That's cool. I'll just go there by myself. And then a whole barrage of obstacles came my way: directions to get there, someone else wants to ride with me, what's the dress code, that someone else isn't going anymore, etc., and it's 10:30 before I leave my apartment. As I began my 40 minute solo drive, i'm thinking, "Wow..The things i do for the loves of my life" but hey, free or $10 to see Goaps isn't bad. Besides, BoomDia made the drive pretty short. So I get there and fall in the back of the behemoth line. I try calling my friends that were already inside but no response. Instead, I was forced to eavesdrop on the conversations going on in line.
A: Who's Goapele?
B: I didn't even know she was performing here.
C: I think she's a local artist.
D: Who's Goapele?
Half an hour waiting by myself in this hell line.
11:30pm and I'm praying she hasn't come on yet. I get to the front of the line and the bouncer says, "Hey man, i need you to put your rag in the car. You can hop back to the front when you get back." I think, "Damn, the things i do for the loves of my life." So i make the trip to my car and come back, but this time with my hat on (because about a fourth of the people inside had hats on anyway). And the bouncer goes, "Hey man, you can't wear hats. No sports attire." Again, "the things i do for love". 3rd roundtrip back and I finally get frisked down. 10 steps later, they charge me $20 bucks at the door. "Wow, the things I will do." After going through all the crap so far, i didn't hesitate to throw away my money. I'm here, and that's what matters.
So just in the nick of time I find my folks smack in front of the performing stage. With my "Change it All" CD in hand and black Sharpie in my pocket, of course i snake my way to them.
She finally comes out, and the people in the crowd start to play the swim move game. "The things I do for Goapele." Turns out i'm the only geek holding up her album... but for my second time seeing her live, I am again, front and center and made that eye contact... performer-audience connection. She looked at me, and all the bullshit that lead up to this moment went away. She did 2 songs, 1 w/ Clyde Carson and since the crowd was so hyphy, he did 2 songs of his own. Cool.
Impossible to breach the VIP area, but no way I would I leave with the an unautographed album in my hand. I had assigned my girl friend (friend that's a girl) to get Goapele to sign my album. Just as planned, it was successful, AND i got her a picture w/ Clyde.
$20 for 2 Goaps, 2 Clyde Carsons, a personalized autograph, and a whole lotta shit to get there. At the end, it was a memorable experience.
